Historically, the festivals origins can be traced to the great Chinese poet, Qu Yuan, whose demise heralded the event. A specialty wine known as realgar is consumed as a popular custom during the race period. While specially embellished silk purses lined with spices are carried to ward malicious forces, as is the custom to display images of Zhong Kui, a mythological figure. All these traditions are followed during the period of the race for an auspicious phase. This popular sporting occasion draws large numbers of spectators with races occurring in countries such as Hong Kong and even Taiwan.
