Doors And The 10 Essential Terms You Should Know

By:

Along with windows, our doors are among the moving parts in our home which we expect to do the most work. They have to be elegant yet tough, decorative yet durable, and as far as possible, represent an extension of our personality which we're prepared to put on show to the outside world.

But how much do we understand about how a door works, and the correct terms for all the different parts? If you have to work with a door replacement company, knowing what the following terms mean can help you understand better how they work, and so be better equipped to look after them.

After all, although doors are designed to last many years, they will achieve this aim far more easily with a little care and attention, just like your mower, your car, or lots of other things in and around your home which contain moving parts, in fact!

Door manufacture and fitting isn't a trade which is any more full of mysterious language and terms than any other but because we tend to 'fit and forget' them most of the time, it's understandable that we often don't know the right terms.

So here's a quick guide to get you 'in the swing' with door terminology:

-Inswing (I/S): A door which opens inwards.
-Outswing (O/S): A door which opens outwards.
-Lite: A pane of glass in a door.
-Stile: A vertical member of a panel door.
-Stop: Small molding strips attached to side and head jambs to guide and stop swinging doors.
-Jamb: The side and head trim of a door frame.
-Grids: Decorative horizontal or vertical bars installed between the glass panes to create the appearance of smaller lites of glass.
-Casing (I/S): Molding around interior and exterior door openings.
-Drip Cap: A horizontal molding placed above doors to divert water.
-Prehung Door: One which has already been mounted to the jambs. Pre-hanging eliminates the often tricky steps of fitting the hinges and squaring the door.

Whether you're replacing your doors as part of a complete home remodeling project, or just need to replace a battered old door, being switched on to what these terms mean can help your project run more smoothly, and ensure that you get the highest quality and best service possible from your installer.

So now, when the time comes to consider replacing your existing doors, you can speak the same language as your door fitters!
