Doorbell Replacement - An Easy Home Improvement Project

Are you tired of your doorbell not working properly? Maybe you want to replace the annoying sound of your current doorbell with something a bit more melodic. Even if you're not a true handyman (or woman), replacing a doorbell if easy, takes only a few tools, and depending on the model can be up in as little as 15 minutes. Here are some tips to changing and installing a doorbell.

The easiest way to install a new doorbell is by choosing a wireless model. This is the best option for an older home that is not wired for a doorbell. The doorbell button works as a transmitter and the chime unit as a receiver. The benefit of the wireless units is that you can install multiple receivers so you can hear the doorbell ring throughout the house.

To install, make sure the button unit has a battery in it and affix it to the wall. If you're covering over an old unit then remove the old plate and tape up the wires before affixing the new unit. The only tools required are screwdrivers or a drill. The chime unit can usually just be hung on the wall and is plugged into an electrical outlet. You'll have to make sure and change the batteries in the transmitter (button unit) but a set should last you at least a year.

While installing a wireless doorbell unit is the easiest method, replacing a conventional doorbell doesn't take very much longer nor does it require many more tools. All you'll need is a screwdriver (Philips or flathead, depending on the manufacturer's choice of screws), wire strippers and electrical tape. Although the doorbell unit is very low voltage, it's always a good idea to turn off the electricity while you work on electrical units. Some will tell you that you don't need to but it's a good rule of thumb.

Remove the old button unit and disconnect the wires from the unit. Pull the wires out of the wall so there is some slack. Strip the wire insulation so that about a half inch of wire is exposed. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer and connect the wires to the new unit. Generally, it does not matter which wire connects to which switch since the button merely acts as break in current. Place electrical tape over any exposed wires and affix the new doorbell plate.

It's almost as easy to replace the chime unit. Simply remove the old unit, strip the wires and connect them to the new unit following the manufactures instructions. Unlike the switch, make sure you correctly connect the wires since this is coming from a power source. Insulate the wires with electrical tape and affix the unit to the wall. It's that easy!
