The protection and security of our family members are always the very first thing that we look into. Our concern to secure things stretches even to our properties and valuables. We go through all the measures to keep them away from danger. We look for a relatively safe place to stay in and even go to the extent of relocating around until we feel that we found it. We set up child proof devices and security systems in the event. The most basic of these security devices is the door lock.

The rope was the primary locking device used. The thief knot got it's name because it was applied to discover thieves however the Gordian knot was used to discourage them. We still use this strategy to shut a door without any fastener. History is questionable as to when the lock started. Archeological results suggest that wooden locks and keys were utilized some 4,000 yrs ago by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. The pin lock is said to be the first lock design created. This is also the most traditionally used lock. The old pin tumbler lock was made of wood and rope and to this day this sort of wooden lock mechanism is still being used in Puerto Rico.

To boost the security level of the old design of the pin lock the positioning of the pins had to be changed and the number of pins is increased. These changes were then the established principles of the modern day pin tumbler locks. During the 1800's the wooden pins were changed to metal pins usually made of bronze or sometimes iron. It was this metal design that got patented in 1805. The patented design was further refined by a father and son locksmith with the name of Linus Yale Sr. and Linus Yale Jr. The pin lock which people see today is the design that the Yale's produced. A different type of door lock is a wafer tumbler lock. Wafer locks are generally used in automobile doors and cabinets. A third widely used type of lock is the lever lock. These locks are popularly utilized in safes and prisons.

There are also mechanical and electromechanical locks. Currently there are multiple variants of the different forms of locks. Among the variations we have the panic bars, lock sets, lock boxes, deadbolts, mortise locks, bump-proof locks to name a few These variations are what are presently used in properties and houses. With todays technology used in lock for the doors we have state of the art security features. Emergency exits doors are installed with one of these security features usually alarmed panic bars. This is also already utilized in our car door alarms.

With the continued innovations of our inventors we know for sure that the door lock technology that we currently have will still be improved allowing us to sleep better knowing that we are safe and secure in our homes. We should all remember that.
