The Victoria International Golf and Country Resort was opened in 1999, and is the largest golf club in the country. The golf course was designed by Donald Steele, the legendary golf course architect.
Sitting on over five hundred acres of land, the course is set next to the banks of the Victoria Reservoir with the famous Knuckles Mountain Range in the backdrop. The grounds offer stunning views of the mountains and the countryside. The undulating terrain appeals to golfing pros and novices alike. The Donald Steele Golf Tournament is an annual amateur golf tournament. The tournament is named in honour of Donald Steele, and is one of the most highly anticipated events in Sri Lanka's golfing circles. The Donald Steele Golf Tournament draws over a hundred participants from fifteen different countries. The tournament is held in February.
Kandy is located towards the centre of the island, and is a popular retreat during the summer months. Situated at an elevation of 500 metres above sea level, the climate here is pleasantly cold throughout the year, and golfers need not worry too much about getting sunburnt. Kandy is home to several of Sri Lanka's most iconic landmarks, including the Temple of the Tooth Relic which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
