Don't You Practice Without A License! Number 1 Warning Tale

By:

If you're new to the cosmetology business and you haven't gotten a license yet, or if you're an old hand at the trade who never got around to getting your license, you may think that you're saving time and money by not getting a license. After all, who really cares about that sort of thing. Licensed cosmetologists can give just as crummy haircuts and manicures as licensed ones, right? And an unlicensed beautician may have all the knowledge she needs to deliver stunning hair and nails.

While that may be true, states have instituted regulations in order to protect the consumer from fraud and from physical harm, so law enforcement takes licensing seriously. So don't do what Debbie Dominguez of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio did.

No License? No Problem?

Debbie was practicing hair care without a license. She was an excellent stylist, and her services were in high demand. She wasn't rich, but she was making a good living and thinking about opening her own salon. Her clients didn't know or care whether she was licensed because she made them look fabulous, and she made home visits instead of making them come to a salon.

The Injury

That all changed when one day Debbie nicked the ear of one of her customers. Little did she know that this powerful woman was a hemophiliac and a personal injury lawyer. The woman bled profusely until she got to the hospital where she could get her medicine. She proceeded to sue the pants off of Debbie.

The Fallout

The first thing that happened was that the lawyers discovered Debbie had no license. Ouch! Strikes one, two, and three. With that knowledge, they pushed Debbie into a scary settlement because not having a license carries an automatic assumption of negligence and liability. Debbie was required to pay a hefty fine, one that took all the seed money for the new salon she was planning to open. Furthermore, the settlement required her to not practice for two years before getting her license again. Poor Debbie's clients caught wind of all this and dropped her, all except a couple of her most loyal customers. Now she's been reduced to working at a fast food restaurant to make ends meet until her sentence expires. It'll take her years to get enough customers back to make opening a salon a possibility.

All because she wanted to take the easy route and practice without a license! Don't get yourself into trouble like Debbie Dominguez!
