Don't Overlook Sales Jokes As A Way To Improve Sales

By:

When you think about the ways that you can improve your sales performance or the performance of your sales team the first thing that comes to mind is probably not sales jokes. In fact, it probably isn't humour at all. That's really too bad because of the techniques you can use to get greater customer and employee loyalty, humour should be at the top of your list. That's not to say that you should don a funny hat or fake glasses and a moustache.

What it is saying, however, is that you should try to introduce sales jokes and other relevant humorous material when you are presenting a sales proposition or discussing sales policies with your employees. The thought of telling a joke can be intimidating to those who are not used to practicing the techniques necessary to do it well. But you don't have to be a professional stand up comic to change the tone of your material to include some levity. There are some things you need to consider when doing this though.

First and foremost when delivering jokes of any kind, not just jokes about sales, jokes about sales meetings, or jokes about sales training is to know your audience. If you are in sales then you already know that your most important tool is your knowledge of the customer and his or her wants and needs.

The same applies to humour. You should know enough about your audience that you at least have some kind of idea what they will find funny. Naturally what is funny to one person may not be funny to another. If you stick with things that people have in common you should be safe though.

There are some topics that should be off limits under any circumstances. Adult jokes about sales always run the risk of offending someone so you want to steer clear of this type of humour. Jokes that discuss politics, religion, race or personal appearance can also get you into big trouble. Poking fun at your self can be extremely effective since people who are not afraid to make jokes at their own expense are often perceived as self confident and sure of themselves.

Proper joke delivery can take years to refine but there are some rules of thumb. In general you tell the joke, pause for the punch line and then wait for the laughter or applause. You should definitely practice your delivery and become comfortable with your material before using it in actual practice.

There are many resources available that can help you get the skills you need. Sales training companies who specialize in helping sales people and executives develop comedy skills are readily available and the Internet is loaded with resources from sales jokes to how to tell a joke tutorials.

The point is, your sales presentations do not have to dry and boring. The introduction of a little humour, a few jokes about sales and other light hearted but appropriate levity will give both you and your intended audience a lift. Before you know it the use of sales joke will help you close more sales and improve your sales team's performance. As an added bonus, both you and your audience will get a laugh.

What could be better than that?
