Don't Look Back And Cringe--find Bridesmaids' Dresses That Work

By:

When I was making preparations to get married, my bridesmaids actually refused to buy the gown I had selected for each of them to wear because they did not want to go to the expense (it was barely one hundred dollars!). They proceeded to convince me that the dresses could be made by hand.

The result was atrocious, and I still cringe when I look at my wedding photos that picture them in the awful dresses. So trust me when I tell you that I know what it is like to deal with a difficult wedding party that won't comply with your wishes.

Now, I am not of the school of thought that no matter which bridesmaid dress you select, one of your bridesmaids will hate it. I just refuse to believe it. The one I had initially selected was of a deep crimson satin, with no extra designs; there was a simple, small bow which drew up underneath the bust. It was simple; it wasn't trendy nor was it old-fashioned. It was just right.

I still regret, as I mentioned, not being more assertive with my bridesmaids. So, when it's your turn, do be particular about the material and the color of the dress. If you are able, try to take your bridesmaids shopping on several occasions. Look through bridal magazines as well to get some ideas on styles they like. If you let it be, this can be a great bonding experience for all of you.

Try to select a style which will be flattering on the frame of each bridesmaid. An A-line gown may do the trick, but if you have exclusively statuesque, thin bridesmaids, you can obviously make adjustments to the styles you are considering.

One way to change things up, however, is to find a manufacturer that offers different dresses in the same material and color. That way, you bridesmaids can actually select the dress which suits their taste the best, but still look stunning and somewhat uniform on your special day.

This is just my opinion, but I highly recommend you avoid gowns that are trendy. Sure, you might have a good laugh when you and your spouse look back through your wedding album and see what has changed in the world of fashion, but to me, it is more enjoyable to have a sort of "timeless," look. Of course, it's all up to you.

Try to have a compromising attitude with your bridesmaids, but still be firm when your decision is made. After all, you really don't want to look back and cringe, like I do at times.
