Don't Let Energy Prices Foster Hatred For Ontario Utility Companies

By:

Although people don't usually look forward to opening any of their monthly bills, they could very well be most afraid of looking at those related to energy usage. It can be downright frustrating to see different energy prices from one month to next, and you might not even be doing anything differently neither. Fortunately, there is a way for you to break free of that cycle: sign up with a different energy supplier in Ontario. Once you do that, you're going to discover that you don't have any reason to hate utility companies anymore.

What most people don't know is that they don't have to buy their energy from the local utility company if they don't want to. A while back, the industry itself was deregulated, which means that the concept of competition was allowed to take hold. Previously, utility companies were responsible for everything though, from making sure pipes and infrastructure were in proper working order to supplying the energy that would actually be flowing through that system. After deregulation occurred, utility companies really only became responsible for maintaining infrastructure. In other words, consumers can now shop around for the lowest energy prices they can find. The main concern of who will continue the upkeep of infrastructure is suddenly not a concern at all. Whether or not you decide to continue getting energy from your current utility company, they're still going to make sure that energy gets delivered to your home as you need it.

Now that you know you have options, where should you start looking? Since utility companies tend to be local operations with limited resources, you should try to find a big company with enough buying power to give you access to more favorable energy prices. Buying power is important because it allows companies to make large purchases on your behalf. As a result, you could end up committing to a long term contract and locking in lower rates for many months or even years. Since a local utility company doesn't have those kinds of resources, you'd be stuck paying market rates with them and dealing with the monthly fluctuations associated with that. By signing up with a large independent energy supplier instead, you could break free.

As you can see, there's really no good reason to continue hating utility companies. If you think about it, they've got their hands full with maintaining your infrastructure already, and since they don't have the resources to buy energy in bulk like an independent supplier, they're forced to charge you market rates. Just because you understand their situation though that doesn't mean that you have to continue paying the energy prices that they charge. Switch to a large independent energy supplier today and no matter what kind of political turmoils arise or what natural disasters occur, you're prices are going to remain constant for the duration of your contract. The only other differences aside from the lower rates you'll end up paying will be who you end up making your checks out to and the fact that your monthly bills will stabilize.

Ontario utility companies have their role, but it just so happens that they're not very good energy suppliers. Let them do what they do best and manage infrastructure while you find more favorable energy prices elsewhere.
