Don't Fall Victim To These Common Decorating Mistakes

Extreme Throw Pillow Syndrome

It's funny how people will take a simple decorating technique, and turn it into a gaudy nightmare. Two or three throw pillows added to a bed creates a tasteful accent, but seven or eight makes a big cluttered mess. Not to mention they're cumbersome to remove each night and replace again in the morning. When adding cushions, remember, less is more.

Road Kill Decor

Some people feel the need to display dead things on their wall. Moose or deer heads, big scaly fish or bearskin rugs (complete with head and gaping mouth). As proud as the owners are, most guests are not impressed by these trophies and they are best stored in a dark corner of the basement or attic.

Flat Screen Artwork

With the advent of flat screen TV's, we're starting to see them being used in place of artwork over a mantle. Just as a television has its place, so does the warmth of a beautiful painting, and never should the two come together. Keep your mantle for candles, photos and vases.

As a rule of thumb, the middle of the television should be at eye level; any higher and you run the risk of neck strain.

Knotty Walls

Funny how a decorating trend becomes outdated, but people still insist on using it. Such is the case with wood paneling. It had a good run, but it's time to put this decorating option to rest. Besides, nothing does more to make a room look smaller than wood.

There's an Art to Hanging Artwork

Nothing's worse than hanging a picture, standing back to admire it and having to strain your neck to see it. Artwork should be hung about 60 inches high, or about eye level at the picture's midpoint. A handy tip to keep your painting always hanging straight is to apply some mounting putty between the picture frame and the wall.

Ceiling Decor

Ceilings are meant for lighting fixtures and nothing else. Why some people feel the need to cover their ceilings with wallpaper, mirrors, tiles or other atrocities, is beyond this decorator. Ceiling decor shortens the walls and makes any room feel smaller.

Artwork Too High and Curtains Hung Too Low

When hanging curtains, take a moment to measure the height before installing drapery hardware. Curtains hung too low make the ceiling seem lower and the room appear darker. The curtain rod should be mounted 6 inches to 1 foot above the window molding. Try painting the rod the same color as the wall so that it blends in with the decor.
