Don't Cancel Christmas Parties!

By:

Christmas parties are the one time in the year when staff can really let their hair down and get to know one another. They are also a chance for bosses to say thanks for all the hard work put in over the year, and show gratitude and appreciation for loyalty.

This year, many companies have had to make necessary cutbacks due to the recession. Understandably, moral is lower this year in some companies than it has been in previous years, and this is probably the single biggest reason why cutbacks shouldn't extend to Christmas parties.

The Forum of Private Businesses (FPB) this month issued a statement urging businesses not to cancel their Christmas parties, as this would do more harm than good in the long run. Spokesperson for the FPB Phil McCabe reiterated that particularly this year, staff parties are a valuable way for employers to say thank you for the hard work employees have put in to keep companies afloat during this very difficult year.
McCabe also warned of the affects on other businesses cancellations to planned festivities could have, and the impacts this could make down the supply chain.
Business owner Graham Donald is throwing a party for his 35-strong staff this year, despite having had a turbulent year. 'I think it's very important; without such loyal and dedicated employees my business would almost certainly have gone under this year,' he says.

'In July, a team of ten in my company agreed to collectively take a 5 per cent pay cut, after I explained how difficult things had become financially and the awful possibility of redundancies.'

Thankfully, most of Graham's company's problems were due to suppliers suffering their own difficulties, and business is now recovering. 'I'm grateful for all of my staff for putting in the extra work to help the business through, and they will have a grand Christmas party as a reward.'

Organising a work party is not difficult and needn't cost the earth. The two main ingredients you need to ensure that everyone has a good time are music and alcohol; the rest will follow. If the budget is very tight, food doesn't have to be expensive, just put on a simple buffet, and hire a mobile disco for the night to provide the entertainment.

Work Christmas parties are often legendary and talked about for months afterwards. It would really be a false economy not to throw a party; a workforce with low morale is not a productive one.
