Dont Read Popular Books? You Cant Avoid Jonathan Franzen

By:

It doesnt matter what kind of literature you are currently into, you will have to read The Corrections at the end of the day. May be you will do it out of your own choice, or because your friends just couldnt stop raving about the characters in the book. Even those who are truly of the stubborn kind (those who dont want to get into the popular literature because they have better things to do) will have to read it when the movie version is released. So what is their excuse? They want to read the book before they see the movie. Not that there is anything bad about it.

He Is Compared With the Greats

The reviewers have likened the Franzen books with literary classics produced by the greats like Tolstoy, Don Delillo, and Cheever. This literary company is high brow indeed, but at the end of the day Jonathan Franzen produces readable feasts, as is evident from the Oprah Book Club attestation also. The Corrections was a literary sensation right a month after its publication, and Freedom became one even before it was published. He takes a downright irreverent, heartbreaking yet funny look at a typical American family.

He Writes What He Likes To Read

Jonathan Franzen is open about the kind of books he prefers to write. He says he would like to write books that he would himself like to read. His first book, The Twenty Seventh City was an out and out thriller and the action in the story started right from the first page. Despite the comparatively bigger success of his later books, he doesnt believe the readability factor has increased in his books now (in his opinion it stays the same).

Do His Books Lack A Plot?

Some reviewers suggested his first book lacked a plot, though not everyone agreed with the notion, since there was plenty of action happening in every page. If his book didnt have a plot, it wouldnt move very quickly. He describes his next books almost like jamming in Jazz, it was like taking the training wheels off (he became more confident about the writer within). Although his latest book is not plot driven, it does have lots of story and soul into it.
