If you have a garage at home, you should park your car in when not in use and make sure that the garage door is securely locked. If you only have a driveway this will also be handy as thieves are much less likely to steal cars in residential areas due to the higher level of risk, so make sure that your driveway is well lit and that it isnt surrounded by a high wall or hedge that criminals can use to hide behind.

When parking in the town centre, try to park in an attended car park. You may be put off by the higher parking charges, but you are paying for the security and it is certainly worth the extra money. If you are unable to find a secure car park, go for well-lit areas with many people nearby, as thieves will be put off by the idea of people watching them.

Whether you are at home or out, always make sure your windows are closed before you leave your vehicle. A thief can use even the smallest opening to gain entry to your car and drive off with it.

You should never leave your car running, even if you are only nipping back inside to grab something and will be back in less than a minute. Thieves can make incredibly quick work of stealing your car.

Never leave valuables in your car, and this includes when you are parked at home. A thief will see this as a reason to break into your car, so dont leave any bags, purses, laptop cases, tool boxes or other items in plain view. If you are planning on buying a new car, ensure that it has proper safety features, such as an anti-theft alarm or an engine immobiliser. You can also buy a steering wheel lock that you can fit whenever you leave your car, which will help to deter criminals.
