Most peoples ideas of the size of the rooms in their house are coloured by an often exaggerated view of how they look at their rooms and what they use them for. The smaller a room, the more important it is to maximise the effect of all available natural light. Another problem comes when planning how to fit out a long, narrow space, such as a hallway. Changing a space with these dimensions requires careful thought, and again, making the most of any available light is a key factor, with mirrors and light wall coverings the most widely-used solution.

It is equally key to try not to get carried away when planning the space in a large room. Attempt to accommodate too much furniture, and the room will look cramped, yet go to the other extreme, and the space is sure to look unwelcoming, and more akin to a warehouse than a room to be lived in. Take careful note of any items which cannot be moved, and of the space required to open any doors, windows, drawers or cupboards.

An experienced interior designer will help avoid these pitfalls, and it also helps if any tradesman used to carry out the work knows the local area. This will mean that the work they suggest in their new bedroom or bathroom quotes will be realistic and retain and possibly even enhance the look of your room.
