Here are some facts about Londons Dominion Theatre you may not know!
Originally built at the end of the 1920s, the theatre was designed to show case live events however due to an economic crisis in the 1930s it never fulfilled its purpose. In order to make money the theatre decided to turn it into a cinema to exploit the recently developed movie industry.

Cinema was clearly the right way forwards and the Dominion got an excellent name for itself as well as generating much needed funds. The links to Musicals however was never far away, the Dominion actually screened the movie version of the sound of music for more than 3 years!!!
Markets changed again and the movie makers stopped producing films of musicals so the Dominion then had to think again! The natural course of action was to bring back the musicals as originally intended.

Cinema completely stopped in 1981 and the Dominion was back as a pure live venue. Since then the wonderful location has hosted big musicals such as Swan Lake, the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast, as well as productions of Grease and Scrooge as well as a number of Royal Variety Performances.

Its large auditorium means it can accommodate thousands of visitors each year. It is located right in the centre of theatreland, next to Tottenham Court Road tube station. Since the closure of its Balcony tier, the theatres two circles and stalls together contain a formidable 2,182 seats. It boasts a beautiful 1920s feel, not having updated its early 20th century design since its opening.

The auditorium is air-cooled, has an infra-red hearing system, and has a wheelchair lifting platform providing ease of access to the stalls for disabled customers. Cloakrooms and toilets are available, and of course merchandise can be bought in the theatres foyer.
