Domain Transfer Process

By: tanyas

Owning your own domain name is pretty easily done with todays resources and technology. But what happens if your company changes names; acquires an existing business with its own name or for some reason you need to do a domain name transfer?

Most domain hosting sites not only allow you to register new domains but also to transfer domain name registrations. Many of these even offer free domain transfers.
Before transferring domain names or your web hosting, there are some important things you should be aware of. The information below should be confirmed by the domain owner before starting the domain transfer.
Below are a few requirements which have to be met prior to the initiation of a domain transfer.
1.The domain name should be in active status
2.The owner must have access to administrative email address
3. Domain owner should have authorization code ready and available

You must realize that domain transfer does not change the nameserver of your website. If you are changing DNS as well as registrars, you need to make sure you change the nameserver before you start a domain transfer.

Once you register your domain, at some point in the registration you would have been asked to lock down the domain name. This prevents the domain from being tampered with without unlocking. Make sure you unlock your domain before starting the domain transfer process. The Domain transfer will not and cannot take place till this step has been done.

If the domain name has been created within the last 60 days, the domain should not be transferred. Make sure that your domain has not expired or has not been renewed in the past 45 days. Also ensure that it does not expire in the next ten days. Making sure of these time lines will prevent a delay in your domain transfer.

Make sure to get the authcode or the authorization code from the current domain supplier before attempting domain transfer.

Once you have all this in place, you should be ready to transfer the domain.

Once you transfer your domain name, you should receive email confirmations or notifications from the old registrar and the new registrar. You will need to confirm that you are authorized to proceed with this domain transfer. Thats it! You should be all set!

You can always check whois to determine whether your domain name meets all the requirements.
Transferring a domain name doesnt have to be tricky or scary as long as you have done your research and are willing to invest a little time and patience. You may even find a great reputable free domain transfer service with a little patience in looking in the right places.
