Dog Potty Training: Training Your Puppy To Use The Bathroom Outside

By:

Puppies younger than 6 months generally lack the bowel and bladder control that is needed for true housetraining. Puppies have less control over when they go and need to be taken out more often because control over their bowel and bladder movements won't be fully developed until they are about 6 months of age. Taking a puppy out every hour is not uncommon because puppies tend to have small bladders and bowels. Puppies are unable to relate to an event which occurred in the past, so if you find that a place has been soiled overnight there is little point in scolding the puppy accordingly. Nor should you rub the dog's nose in it.

Puppies need to be socialized between 8-14 weeks of age. This will teach your puppy to be more tolerant and new stimuli and people. Puppies seem to have a mind of their own and while they are certainly trainable, some seem as if they are purposely doing everything they can to drive their owner absolutely insane with their behavior. Puppies can get into really small places like underneath chairs, couches, tables, etc. Keeping an eye on your puppy will ensure they don't go to the bathroom in any hidden places and it will also let you know when they need to go outside.

Puppies don't go in the house to be mean or to get you. They do it because they haven't learned where they should go. Remember, that your new dog is a puppy, not a child. Puppies live for the moment and scolding him after the incident has already taken place will leave your puppy thinking that he's being punished for whatever he happens to be doing when you find the accident. The same rule applies for rubbing your puppy's nose in the mess. Puppies can start outdoor or indoor potty training on their first day in their new home.

A little encouragement with treats and verbal praise will aid in this training.Feeding at the exact same times each day means that your dog's potty time will be predictable too. This makes it easier for both you and the dog to avoid accidents. Feed him regularly at a precise instant. Emptying the bowels too is best done according to a particular plan.

Reward the puppy for using the designated space and avoid changing the location of the paper or litter box until the puppy is consistently using the space as the toilet area. Many owners of the toy breeds prefer paper or litter box training as an alternative to going outside. Reward with great treats like chicken, turkey, cheese, etc.
