Dog Collar Uses

By:

There are many dog collars available on the market today. Your choice is simplified if you know a little about what the collar is designed to do. In order to find the right collar for your dog, here are some of the possibilities.

For puppies and very young dogs, a basic nylon dog collar is just what is needed. It is soft and flexible, durable, easy to clean, and you can easily attach your pet's ID tags to it. An adjustable collar also grows with your puppy.

A dog harness is great for using to restrain your pet while in a car. It also works well for restraining a pet that has to be tied out. It is usually harder for a dog to slip out of a harness than a collar. The harness can also be used when taking your pet for a walk and is a very versatile collar.

If you have a dog with a rather large neck, and he keeps slipping out of his collar, you may want to consider using a Martingale dog collar. This collar has a sliding section that will tighten as the dog pulls against the leash and release when he stops. This prevents the dog from pulling his head out, but also won't choke the dog due to the limited closure style.

The traditional training collar is sometimes referred to as the choke chain. The metal links of this collar slide inside a ring and tighten around the dog's neck when he pulls or when the handler gives a quick tug. This collar is a great training aid when used by the careful trainer. Make sure to put the collar on properly, only use during training sessions, and never allow children to use it.

The half check collar combines the metal sliding chain of the training collar and the fabric covered collar of the Martingale. This collar is very similar to the Martingale collar except that the metal links will slide faster so it can be used as a training collar without being able to choke the dog. This is a good choice for a dog who pulls out of his collar and also as a training collar for a child to use.

Another training collar uses prongs that pinch the dog's neck when he pulls on the leash. Although they looks like cruel spikes, the prongs don't injure the dog, but merely provide little pinches to get the dog's attention. This type of training collar can't choke the dog and is used on dogs that have a high pain threshold who have shown a disregard to the other types of training collars.

Designer dog collars come in many colors and styles. Made from nylon webbing covered with fabric, they come in many prints including dog breeds and holidays. You can have a custom made collar just for your dog.
