Does Your Overweight Child Lack Self-confidence?

By:

Childhood obesity is a serious problem in today's society, and it is reaching epidemic levels in many areas. The unfortunate thing about this type of obesity is that it can be very difficult for the child to handle it properly and to maintain their self-confidence while living with the additional weight. That is why you, as the parent or supporting guide in their life needs to step up to the plate at this time.

Teaching a child how to lead a healthy life and to get the diet and exercise necessary in order to lose the weight may not be the best way to approach this situation. There may be times whenever it is possible that the child would like your assistance in losing weight, but they may not appreciate the reminder that they are overweight. Children often need to deal with rejection at school and issues with self-confidence as a result of their weight problem, the last thing they need is to deal with those same issues at home.

Support your child and make sure that they are confident in their relationship with you. Make sure that you never draw attention to the fact that they are overweight, but rather, guide them through your own example and be supportive of them in what they try to do. You should also be supportive of them in any extracurricular activities that they decide to pursue, perhaps even encouraging them to take part in these activities whenever possible.

These are things that are going to stick with your child for the rest of their life, and by being a support to them during this difficult time, you help them to have the self-confidence needed to succeed. Since that is what all of us want for our children, you can make that the motivating factor in taking the initiative in this regard.
