Does Tire Alignment Matter

By:

When you really don't know much about your car other than how to drive it somewhere, you might not realize how important certain things are with your car. For instance, when was the last time you had the tires aligned? You maybe haven't had the tires aligned because you don't know how often you should. When many people disregard the notion of aligning their tires, they shouldn't. Having the tires properly aligned and balanced means the tires will have a longer life and will be safer for you to drive on. Improperly aligned tires can cause a lot of wear and tear on the tires, the rims, the brakes, and even the suspension system on the car.

Tire Wear and Tear

When the tires on your car aren't aligned properly, it means they are off balance in one direction or another. Think of it as the same way as when you see someone walking on the heels of their shoes. There is more pressure added to the back of the foot, therefore the soles of the shoe will wear out faster than the front of the shoe. The same thing goes for your tires. Tires tilted to the inside will wear out on the inside first, even though the outside of the tire looks good. One tire can be tilted more than another tire, causing uneven wear. Good alignment is necessary in order to keep the tires in the same condition.

Tire Rotation

Another way to help keep the tires in good shape with even wear is to have them rotated every few thousand miles. Tires from the front can be moved to the back, and the back ones can be moved up front. Tires can also be moved side to side so you can have ones that wear on the inside, and then wear on the outside. Tire rotation is just another way to keep the wear on the tires balanced so they have a longer life.

Replacing Tires

When tires start to show signs of losing their treads, have them replaced sooner rather than later. Sure, it is expensive to have four tires replaced at one time, but the alternative could be much worse. Tires that are low on tread have less grip on the road. Cars with less grip are more prone to accidents. Many accidents are caused from a combination of items, such as wet road conditions, the speed of the vehicle, and the conditions of the tires, which are usually low on the tread.

Getting new tires only takes an hour or two. The process doesn't have to be painful and can be done by any dealership, auto garage, or even a tire shop.

Tire Emergencies

Tires that are not treated correctly might have some nasty issues to deal with on the side of the road. A flat tire might happen, or even the tire could come apart and cause you to lose control while you're driving. Neither scenario is appealing, so in order to prevent both situations, you need to take care of your tires. Preventative maintenance and routine inspections will go a long way to keeping your tires safe while you're driving. If your tires are safe on the road, it means you and your loved ones have a better chance of staying safe on the road too.
