Does Miami Do Celebration Cakes? And How!

Recently in Miami, I was helping a good friend of mine look for celebration cakes and other delectable nibbles for her upcoming wedding. Now granted, I dont live in Miami year round, so when I think of Floridas trendiest city I think of golden beaches, great nightlife, and lazy family vacations. As for the shopping- designer glad rags and Miami string bikinis anyone? What I dont picture is cake. Or Miami custom cupcakes. Nevertheless, thats exactly what we were on a mission to find. And boy did we find it.

Following our trusty handheld city navigators (a.k.a. cell phones), we closed in on our target store- but when we got there I almost kept walking, thinking we hadnt found it yet. The window displayed what looked like gorgeous- and I mean designer gorgeous- lavishly decorated top hats in rich, beautiful fabrics, bejeweled hat boxes, and tissue paper stuffed bags, accented with rippling bows and cute high fashion purses and shoes. It was one of the fabled Miami custom cake shops. I took another look at the display.

Lavishly decorated top hats. Check. Beautiful fabrics. Check. Bejeweled hat boxes and rippling ribbons. Wait a minute... those ribbons are made of chocolate. And the top hat was a cake. So are the hat boxes and the purses, and the shoes are made of delicately colored chocolate too. Did we just get run over and get sent straight to shopping heaven? In fact, everything in the window is an edible part of some kind of wonderful Miami celebration cake. Needless to say, we went inside.

Inside The Treasure Trove

Not only had I never seen so many different styles of decorative cake, Id never seen baked goods look so amazingly chic. There were designer baby cakes topped with cutely articulated miniature zoos, chocolate teething keys, and monkeys with delicately curling tails. There were cakes that looked like toys and cakes that looked like half opened presents- complete with blue chocolate tissue paper rumpling out of the edges. There were cakes that looked like open children's books, and cakes that looked like a bottle of wine nestled snugly in a straw filled wooden crate. The attention to detail, the perfection of the textures was amazing. The kind of technical skill it implied was something I never imagined existed, but these incredible Miami custom cakes had it in spades. They even had tiny custom cupcakes. And of course those beautiful, gorgeous, chocolate designer shoes.

Dont Settle for Normal

After experiencing what a true designer cake decorator can do, its clear that we should never again settle for just cake. Not when its possible to order one that is perfectly suited to a partys theme or occasion. Next time youre in charge of the custom cake or cupcakes for an event, why not delight everyone there and show up with a work of artmade of chocolate? Or mini-masterpieces covered in sprinkles and curly shavings of peppermint? Youre guaranteed to be the life of the party.
