Does Improving Physical Appearance Through Liposuction Make People Happier?

By:

The point of cosmetic surgery is to improve the appearance of the body. For example, people get liposuction with the expectation of becoming thinner and more attractive. When they have had fat removed, they expect to be more acceptable to other people and therefore to have an improved quality of life. But does having cosmetic surgeries actually make people happier?

Cosmetic surgery was historically reserved mostly for the wealthy. Those who could afford to pay for it were made more beautiful than the average person.

Because health insurance doesn't usually cover this kind of surgery, even today not everyone can afford it.

Celebrities have been known to improve their appearance through cosmetic surgeries, and the standards of beauty are currently defined by the famous people on the magazines.

Everyone wants to look as attractive as a celebrity, and this is why people are lining up to get cosmetic surgeries.

Underlying the desire to look better is the desire to be happier, and many people genuinely believe that small improvements to their appearance can lead to big improvements in their social life.

Because most of the celebrities are thin and also because of the recent health craze over strict weight standards, many people are desperate to lose weight.

Liposuction is not a conventional weight loss tool because only a few pounds can be removed at one time.

Unfortunately, a lot of people don't realize just how small an amount of fat can actually be removed during liposuction. Eight to ten pounds is the limit and most of the time fewer pounds are actually removed!

Even when learning this, some insist that a few pounds are all it takes.

The results of liposuction vary between individuals, but often they are not dramatic. At best, recipients of the surgery can expect clothing to fit more loosely and for the affected area to look thinner and more toned than it did before.

How can people expect such small changes to improve life so much? Does looking a little thinner really make people happy?

Of course the answer to that question depends on the individual. Some people are fortunate to have more obvious results than others and some naturally respond to liposuction more effectively.

In most cases, there is some disappointment. Although attractiveness has been improved, life goes on just the same as it did before. The same conflict and problems that a person was dealing with before are still there.

Cosmetic surgeries are all a little different, but the same may be true of all of them; if people have unrealistic expectations, they will be disappointed, and making small changes to one's appearance does not change everything else in a person's life.
