Does Dissolving Toilet Paper Make A Difference?

By:

While thick, plush toilet papers may be more luxurious this can cause problems if your plumbing is prone to clogging. A clogged toilet is not something anybody wants to put up with on a regular basis but did you know it could be your choice of paper that is causing it? Some of the leading brands most families choose have shown to be slow to dissolve such as Charmin, Quilted Northern, and Cottonelle. If you currently have a low flow toilet, or old plumbing these popular choices of toilet paper may not be your best bet.

If your house is hooked up to your cities sewer system and you have problems with a clogged toilet often your best bet may be to switch to a different toilet paper. While less luxurious, less plies will dissolve quicker and give you much less trouble in the long run. It seems that Angel Soft toilet tissue it the quickest to dissolve and is favored by users with sensitive plumbing such as an older house, or use in an RV or boat while Charmin seems to cause the most problems with a clogged toilet for the same people.

On the other hand if your house utilizes a septic tank system a dissolving toilet paper may cause more problems in the long run. There is some indication that the cellulose fiber used in dissolving toilet paper may not fully biodegrade. When a toilet paper breaks down it eventually turns into its original components, cellulose and lignin. If the toilet tissue dissolves in your septic tank it could into the leach field and block the soil spaces needed for effective treatment. More durable toilet paper can and will float to the top of the septic tank and add to the scum layer. This layer can be quickly removed by septic tank pumping, as opposed to dissolving paper.

As you can see dissolving toilet paper actually does make a difference. Whether it is for better or worse depends on your homes current plumbing system. With an old or sticky plumbing system hooked up to city sewer lines your best bet is to forgo the luxury of plus tissues and say good bye to clogged toilets. If you are hooked up to a septic system it would be better to stick to your "go to" brand of tissue and upgrade your plumbing system, as the dissolving toilet paper can and will eventually cause problems.
