Does Digital Dj Equipment Encourage Playlist Performers?

By:

Buying DJ equipment used to be pretty straight forward; you needed turntables, a mixer and fader, some headphones and something to play it all through. Luckily most clubs would provide all of this and all the DJ had to do was bring the music along, which often required the combined efforts of a small team of huskies thanks to the weight of vinyl and the protective flight cases they needed to be housed in. Today, things are dramatically different, and it is no surprise to see a DJ turn up with little more than a memory stick, is this a time to lament a passing tradition, or embrace the future of DJ culture.

It is no exaggeration to say that the changes happened almost overnight. One minute the world is listening to the familiar depth of tunes on vinyl and the next there was an influx of tinny tunes emanating from the like of MP3 players plugged into a PA system. It wasn't long however before the technology caught up and gave the average DJ a chance to play tunes through digital DJ equipment that had the potential to rival decks.

The introduction of CD mixers was a hesitant step in this direction, but as CDs are set to become obsolete just like cassettes, more effort has been put into pushing forward solid state technologies. This means that a DJ will be able to purchase equipment that can play digital music to the same quality as vinyl. DJ equipment of this sort will essentially free the DJ from the former binds of music transportation, and the constraints associated with carrying a finite amount of tunes.

The benefits for the DJ are boundless, not only does it make it possible to conduct a world tour with an entire record collection on one small device, it also means that loss caused by breakage or theft are reduced too. Digital files can be backed up, so therefore always replaceable, and there will be no more heartbreak from scratched records, or vinyl that has been dropped accidently.

Some music fans worry that new technology will create DJ's with playlists instead of responding to the atmosphere within a club; do not fear, some of the world's top DJ's are already using the new equipment with such a degree of talent that no-one has noticed it is no longer vinyl. If music is in the heart, then the only DJ equipment that will be successful is the sort that allows creative freedom, not creation of play lists.
