Does Anyone Have The Need For Ink Cartridges?

By:

Today the majority of people think of cartridges as those used for printer and fax machines and yet there are other types which are used by many hundreds of people everyday!

These are ink cartridges for pens and whilst the art of hand writing letters and business correspondence may be diminishing there still many people who have fountain pens which have the means to replace the ink. Fountain pens have moved along with the times and although it is still possible to buy a fountain pens which is refilled by dipping it into a bottle of ink to refill the reservoir, for ease of use the vast majority of ink pens now have easy to replace ink cartridges systems.

These styles of pens are used by many executives and business people, with many presentation and corporate gifts including some very expensive fountain pens with 14 or 18 carat gold nibs within gift sets. These do not only show a mark of respect for the receiver, those who hand write their correspondence or sign important documentation gold nibs provide flexibility and show the characteristics of the handwriting.

Registrars of births, deaths and marriages have been recording significant events in their usually impeccable writing since 1837. All registrars are conscious that they follow a long and noble tradition of filling in birth, marriage and death certificates in ink and few would dream of using anything less. Anyone who has been married will know that although it may be the only time in their life they'll ever use a fountain pen, they too are passed a fountain pen to sign their marriage certificate!

But perhaps handwriting gains its greatest importance when it is least legible? Doctors are renowned for scrawling undecipherable prescriptions and medical notes. A study in the British Medical Journal found medics' writing was considerably worse than other healthcare workers or administrative staff. Poor writing has often been blamed for medication errors, as such many doctors have moved to using computers to reduce the number of potential mistakes.

Other reasons some people prefer to use fountain pens is the ease in which the ink flows will little or no pressure needed. This can be extremely useful for example for arthritis sufferers and those who are unable to apply downward pressure onto a ballpoint pen.

Most of the famous fountain pen manufacturers have standardised the size of ink cartridges purely for convenience of users, meaning that it is not always necessary to buy the same brand of cartridge as the pen itself. These also means that it is possible to bulk buy cartridges not only to ensure they are always to hand but also as a cost effective method of purchasing.

Another reason fountain pens are used, as in the case of law firms and registrars, is that it is virtually impossible to alter what has been written in ink without it being very apparent, hence the major use of these styles of pens related to legal matters.

Therefore although fountain pens may not be the first thing which springs to mind when ink cartridges are mentioned there is little doubt that their existence will remain for many years to come.
