Does Alcohol Rehab Really Work?

By:

Alcohol rehabilitation has come on leaps and bounds over the years. Not to say that there is great clarity as to the cause with many conflicting theories and ideas still floating around as to not just alcohol-related but all addiction. Some still even believe it to be caused by a devilish influence although a far less popular theory than that of yesteryear.

An effort to rehabilitate an alcoholic today would first see them undertaking a detox programme. It can take form three up to seven days. Many will suffer withdrawal symptoms with no longer being able to drink alcohol and will have to be monitored during this time. Once the detox is complete, it is really a psychological matter for the addict to confront.

There are a few elements which come together to form a traditional rehab programme and this usually consists of individual, group and family therapy and also, spiritual counselling. It is recommended that therapy is continues with support if available.

There are some more updated approaches being incorporated into alcohol rehab programs to deal with a range of effects of alcohol addiction. Holistic Alcohol Rehab has proven very popular and handles a range of needs dealing with the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual sides of addiction. Examples of holistic methods would be acupuncture, fitness training, herbal remedies and massage. These methods are not undertaken, however, without being complimented by more traditional counselling in the form of both individual and group therapy.

Support is an integral and often underrated part of rehab in spite of its well-documented reports on just how pivotal a role it has to play in an addict's recovery programme. Family support especially and the spouse in particular can have a major say in how the rehab goes. If the spouse is not supportive or worse, suffers from an addiction also, this could certainly slow or even halt progress of the rehab programme.
