Does A Wrinkly Wrapper Damage Your Cigar?

By:

The key to having a great tasting cigar with rich flavor is making sure that the wrapper the cigar is wrapped in is not wrinkled, but smooth and tight. While a wrinkly wrap does not necessarily mean your cigar is ruined and destined for a date with the trash can, it can definitely lessen the smoking experience. I

First, understand that a wrinkled wrapper is not necessarily a sign of disaster. The location and severity of the wrinkles will determine that. For instance, if the cap of the cigar is wrinkled, it can be easily cut away with a cutter without damaging the cigar and ruining your smoke. However, you'll need to make sure that you don't cut away the entire cap, as it holds the wrapper together.

One of the most common areas for wrinkles to occur in cigar wrappers is at the cap or head of the cigar. If this area is particularly heavily wrinkled, you can simply cut this portion off and it is no big deal. The rest of your cigar and your smoking experience will not be affected in the slightest. When you cut the cap off, make sure to leave a tiny bit of it still connected to the rest of the cigar to make sure that the wrapper does not unravel. If you cut too much off, it can cause the entire cigar to unravel and it will need to be disposed of.

Before you begin to make any cuts, it's a good idea to examine the length of the cigar. Wrinkles on the cigar's body may be a sign that it has been crushed, dropped, or damaged in some other way. The wrinkles could be hiding a tear in the cigar, which will greatly diminish your smoking experience. If worse comes to worst, try smoking the cigar after making the appropriate cuts on the ends. If you notice extra smoke coming from the body of the cigar, a tear has occurred.

As a final note, a wrinkly wrapper can actually be a sign of underlying damage. Often, wrinkles can hide tears in the wrapper. You might not notice those tears until after you've lit up and are wondering why you can't get a good draw on your smoke. No matter what brand or price the cigar might be, always think very carefully and fully examine the cigar before making a purchase. In the end, it's usually safer to err on the side of caution and avoid cigars with wrinkled wrappers. Unless, of course, you've already arrived home only to find out that you have a wrapper problem. In that case, carefully examine the smoke before lighting up.
