Not only does the doc's expertise and skill matter but the way their office is run, their communication style and their bedside manner must align as well. Checking out how past patients have rated them really gives some behind the scenes information about each physician. Of course, a person perusing the reviews should note how many individuals have tidbits to share. One glowing report or critical rant can't be given too much validity as it might just have been that person's experience. The more reviews posted, the better. A hefty number of posts will give a more balanced view. Here are some ways that these sites can help a patient select the best doc for their needs:

- Expertise: Reading about others' experiences can give insight into how the doc and his or her office staff may operate. Is there a high level of satisfaction among past patients? Do they have lots of praise for the MD and backup staff? Is there a discussion about healing, successful operations and good results? These are all signs of expertise.

- Office staff feedback: Believe it or not, a physician's office staff can be a make or break component. If the clerical workers are incompetent, it can create havoc in one's medical experience. The receptionist and secretarial workers are the gateway between the patient and the physician. They are also the connection between patients and their insurance companies. They determine who gets in and when an appointment is scheduled. They are responsible for keeping everything running smoothly. Waiting around forever to get in to the examining room? Not able to get in to see the doc for days? Insurance billing all mixed up? The clerical staff may well be the ones to blame for all these snafus. It's also a red flag that the doc may be clueless to what's going on in his or her practice. Not a good thing.

- Communication style: How a professional person communicates is crucial to the success of a business relationship. This includes both speaking and listening. An MD needs to be able to explain everything in a way that a layperson can understand it. What's the use of all that knowledge if it can't be dispensed to others who have less schooling? He or she also needs to be able to hear what patients are trying to tell him or her. If the physician is a bad listener, he or she may miss key details that could result in serious consequences.

- Bedside manner: A health care practitioner's bedside manner can make a big difference in quality of care. Is the doc sensitive, compassionate and polite? This can put the patient and their family at ease and eliminate potential stress. Immune systems are amped up when an ill person is treated by a doctor with a wonderful bedside manner.
