By:

Carpets and rugs form the major aspects of floor dcor. Putting up the dcor isn't that much difficult when compared to maintaining them. But when compared among the two i.e. carpet and rugs, Rug Cleaning and maintenance are much easier than that of the carpets. This is because of its size and mobility.

There are many ways of rug cleaning. You need to adopt all or any of them or in combination depending upon the suitability and requirement. But before that let us see some of the Don'ts when it comes to Rug Cleaning and rug handling

> Do not use detergents that have hard chemicals in them. This will damage the interwoven threads and many times the color of the rugs.

> Do not be careless towards spillovers and stains, even if it is small and unnoticeable. Certain types of items that cause these stains leave their side effects that would slowly damage the rug.

> Do not leave your rugs wet. Moisture is the first enemy for rugs. They attract dust particles and absorb them deep inside the carpet that begins eating up the material from within. Always dry them up immediately.

> Do not take bad odors lightly. Odor itself is an indication that there is something unwanted remnant on the rugs. This may be dust, dampness that may lead to fungi or food particles or any such thing that is getting decomposed. These damage the rugs very easily.

> Do not scrub the rug in a circular motion. This will damage the weaving. Remember that the weaving method is always linear and hence it should always be handled in its course only.

> Do not miss to clean the rugs on both the sides at least once in a week. Remember when you are cleaning the rug with a vacuum or anything you are cleaning the upper portion and maximum penetration is only to the middle portion. It doesn't cover the lower layer. When dust remains for long in the lower portion, it begins to damage the rug in that area.

> Do not fold your rugs. Always make it a point to roll it out. This way you will going with the flow of the weaving pattern thereby keeping it safe. Folding itself means you are forcing it against its natural path thereby causing damage in the places where it is folded.

Now coming to Rug Cleaning always make it a point to handle it with care.

> Keep your rugs dust free and vacuumed it regularly. Remember that dirt and dust are the first enemies of rugs.

> Use gentle detergents or shampoo to clean your rugs.

> For an odor free rug, you can sprinkle baking soda on the rug, leave it for sometime and wipe it off with a damp cloth and vacuum it or directly give a steam vacuum.

> Take extra care to see that while vacuuming you, even accidentally don't run it over the fringes or tassels. As these are loosely let unwoven threads they would get stuck in the vacuum and get damaged. This will spoil the look of the entire rug.

Following these points will help your rugs look new and beautiful and will last long.
