Do's And Don't's Of Garbage Disposal

By:

The garbage disposal really is a forgotten unit in homes that is taken for granted. That is, until homeowners are forced to go without its usage, mostly due to improper usage because of the lack of knowledge.

There are now many disposals to choose from presently, from different sizes and even models so quiet you would never know that they are being used. Yet, no matter what model or make, there are still fundamental rules for their usage. We will call these rules the Do's and Don'ts. It is crucial that homeowners understand proper operation of disposals, not only to keep them working at their optimal performance, but also to keep them running altogether.

The Do's

Whenever using the disposal, always use a high flow of cold water. If there is any grease or oil entering the unit, cold water will solidify them thus allowing them to be chopped up easily. Hot water will only liquefy and may cause drains to clog.

Be sure to run your disposal frequently. Using it regularly will ensure that all parts stay moving and prevent rust and corrosion.

To clean disposal walls, try grinding small abrasive matter such as fish and chicken bones, eggshells or even very small fruit pits. These types of material actually help clean the disposal's walls.

If you have large food waste to grind, always cut them into smaller pieces. Remember to insert the smaller pieces one at a time to prevent clogging.

Freshen up the disposal by using lemon, orange, grapefruit, or any citrus peel, especially when the drain begins to smell.

Lastly, keep the disposal clean by running it with cold water and a little liquid detergent for a minute.

The Don'ts

Never grind anything other than food matter in the disposal.

Never grind fibrous material such as corn husks, onion skins, or celery stalks. These materials can become entangled in the blades and jam the motor.

Do not use expandable food like pasta or rice. These can expand in the pipes causing clogs, especially when hot water is added.

Never turn disposal off without water running. First, turn off disposal and then allow water to run an additional 15 seconds more.

Never grind large bones, potato peels, or cigarette butts. They will damage the motor and clog pipes.

Never to grind coffee grounds. Over time they can accumulate and clog the unit.

Finally, following these simple tips will ensure that your garbage disposal will always operate correctly and give years of service.
