Do You Want Cell Phone Apps Come Of Age

By:

The buyers of smart cell phones, right from the start of their appearance on the market, have been wowed by the fact that these phones can be endowed with extra functions using cell phone apps. But where does the term app come from?

Nothing more than application, of course, which is to say software for your phone that makes it more customizable. Apps actually change where cell phones fit in your life, making them so much more than just communication devices. In fact downloading applications to your phone takes it to place never imagined by the phone service operator.

What has changed, comparatively recently, is how you get apps onto your phone. It used to be the case that a programmer crafted your application, and then placed it onto your operators website. A rich universe of these was indeed created in this way by the software geeks.

But the latest thing to hit smart phones, starting with Google's phone operating system, Android, is the ability to make your own apps. Rather than putting up with those that do some of what you need, but, irritatingly, have some missing function, you can design your own perfect little application.

So how does 'App Inventor', the program Google have put on Android to do this, turn you into an application developer? It works because it reduces programming to some simple steps, using obvious units of the cell phone's functionality. And as a result cuts out the middle man, and puts you in charge of making apps that you want.

What sort of things can you make an app do? Well, given that you'll have access to the phone's features like accelerometers, web services and video, GPS information and phone orientation, it could be said that the only limit is your imagination.

Undoubtedly the addition of the capability to make cell phone apps is something on the urgent to do list of Apple, Blackberry and Microsoft's Win Mo development teams.
