Do You Think A Career In Digital Art Could Be For You?

By:

Art has existed for as long as we have and probably even before we even came to be. Art encompasses many things and does not have a strict set of rules. Anything can qualify as art because it is all around us and exists in the clothes that we wear, the furniture we use, the cars we drive, the electronic gadgets we use, and in the paintings that we hang on our walls. Of course, they exist in the minds and work of painters, sketchers, and artists as well. Art is a way of expressing one's self, and one form of art that has only increased in popularity even more as technology has advanced is digital art.

Digital art refers to drawings and images that are created with the help of digital imaging software. Some of the more popular software programs that can make digital images are Adobe Photoshop, Autodesk Maya, Solidworks, and more. These programs cost quite a bit of money, and unless you want to spend a few hundred dollars for them, you can opt for open-source and free programs, such as Blender and Google SketchUp.

There is a huge demand for designers in the digital field. Companies that develop video games, computer software, websites, movie animation, architectural firms, or even magazine and brochure companies all need designers of all levels to create these images. For example, movies, such as Toy Store, A Bug's Life, and Finding Nemo, were created with 3D software. 3D Studio, Maya, and Lightwave are just a few of the programs you might need to be proficient in for a career in 3D illustration.

If you are considering a career in digital art, you need to narrow down your choice or choices to a specific field. Naturally, if you desire to create logos for companies or design the background for websites, your focus will be on graphic design. Although each digital art career is closely related to the other, the industry requires a different set of skills and proficiency in different software programs, so you don't want to take a general digital art class at your local community college to learn basic Photoshop and expect to work for a major video game company.

Meet up with your counselor and see what your options are. Depending on your needs and how quickly you want to finish school and get right into the work field, you might want to consider attending a technical or trade college because you can usually attain your associate's degree after a year and a half to two years. It is also important to note that just because you are creating your work digitally, does not mean you don't need to have basic art skills. Showing you can draw on the computer as well as you can with an actual pencil appeals to these companies and looks good in your portfolio.
