Smoking is something that is becoming less and less and less socially acceptable in society. And not only is it less and less socially acceptable, but more and more smokers are starting to quit as a result of health concerns. If you have been a smoker for a long time, or even if you are someone who has only recently picked it up, and think that maybe you should quit, then here are some tips that you might find helpful as you try and get tobacco and nicotine out of your life.

If you think that now is the time to quit smoking, then one of the first things you need to do is gather up all of your smoking supplies, this means your cigarettes, your lighters, and your ash trays, and throw them all away. One of the most important things about quitting is getting yourself out of the mind set of a smoker. You need to tell yourself that you are not a smoker anymore and that you will never smoke again. This is an exercise in will power. If you can break the mentality of a smoker, then you are already on your way to being able to resist cravings.

This brings up the second point that if you have decided that you would like to use nicotine gum and patches to try and quit, that they can be very helpful, but only if you have the constitution to quit. You cannot rely on the gum and patches to fight back the cravings for you, but instead you must develop the will power to be able to resist the cravings on your own. This will help you build up a stronger sense of will power and strength that you will come to value.

This does not mean, however, that you should try to quit completely on your own. No, you should have a friend or family member that you can talk to whenever you feel that the nicotine cravings are becoming too much for you. This same person can also help you to keep from spending your money on cigarettes. It is also important that you ask any friends or family members that smoke to not smoke around you, although remember to ask them politely. They should understand. Remember, if you have been smoking for many years, than you should consult a doctor about any other necessary measures you should take towards your goal of a smoke free life.
