Tell them you realize now how important it was to break up because you have been able to see clearly now how you may have acted toward them and caused problems. This letter can be a way to break the ice with them since they have not heard from you for a while.

Your hope is that they have been getting curious as to where you have been and what you are up to. The idea is to get their curiosity going and for them to forget the bad things that happened in your relationship and to remember the good. As the bad memories fade they may start to miss you and be open to talking to you again.
