Do You Need European Breakdown Cover For Ireland ?

An often asked question is the following: 'Do I need Euopean breakdown cover in order to travel to Ireland?". This thought often arises long after your anxiety surrounding the possibility of leaving something at home.... "Dear, did you bring our credit cards? Did you bring the hairdryer? Did you leave the door unlocked?.... ad infinitum".

After being relieved of these anxieties, either through pulling over in the hard shoulder, or calling your next door neighbour (wait, do I really trust him?), you can put all these anxieties behind you. Until, you see the big boat that will soon carry you and your beloved (car) across the water. Do I need a specialist breakdown cover for this ? And we start again... Whilst you are on your ferry to ireland.

The answer is..... it depends. First things first, if you do not have breakdown cover already, you should have no anxiety. Your anxiety should either turn into panic or wishful thinking. If you do have breakdown cover for the UK, you need to either check your policy documents or give them a call, to ensure that you are covered.

Your existing policy may not cover you for the Republic of Ireland as this is not part of the UK, and you should seek this information out within the exclusions part of the policy (or underneath the areas covered).

Once you have firmly established what your existing policy covers, you have two options. (1) Relax (2) Ask either for an add-on to the existing policy, or take out a dedicated European breakdown cover policy. If you do not have an existing policy, you can still utilise the latter part of the disjunction in (2) or take out UK cover with a European add-on.

One thing to bear in mind whilst you are looking for european breakdown cover, is that some policies will not cover you whilst you are in the UK. So, if you plan to go to Northern Ireland and then commute into the Republic, and then back again, you need to understand clearly where your limits and inclusions lie. Who would have thought that going to Ireland could have been complicated?

Furthermore, if you are in the situation of not having any UK breakdown cover and you wish to buy european breakdown cover, you need to ensure that you purchase this prior to you leaving the UK. Policies, very often, state that your cover must begin and end in the UK.
