Do You Need A Sump Pump Installed?

By:

Some homes are located high on a hill or other elevated position, and have little reason to fear flooding. Others have property in more low-lying areas, perhaps because the surrounding land is fertile and flat. Some homes have only a moderate risk of flooding, but want added protection against potential damage. The owners of basements have the most to worry about the flooding of the interior of their homes, because basements are at least partially below the ground level, and a busted pipe could flood the whole thing as well as rain water.

The solution for many years has been a quality sump pump. These deceptively simple devices use an electric motor to force rising water down a drain, and are frequently located at the lowest point of a ground area. Many homes do not have them, but they are almost universal to basement owners. Basements also have conventional drains, that operate by gravity alone, but it could be that waters rise too fast, or the drain becomes clogged by debris. Having a functional sump pump can be an essential investment to protect your home and property.

Basements and the low level of houses have tremendous economic value. They are the foundation of a home, and damage may render the entire home structurally unsound. The advantage of having a basement is that water enters this large space rather than the home, and the majority of basements have waterproof concrete walls and floors. This same stability virtually guarantees flooding of the concrete basement, destroying any unprotected goods that might be lying on the floor. A smart home owner, in addition to installing a quality sump pump, will protect his property with waterproof plastic containers. Perishable goods, such as potatoes and other roots, should be stored above the ground.

One of the disadvantages of a pump is that is requires electricity. The same storm that brought flood waters might have also knocked out electricity. Manual operation may be possible, but it would mean wading through the floodwater, risking personal injury. An older person especially should not try this. To improve security against flood, and as a benefit against general power outage in the home, it might be wise to invest in an automatic generator. Such a generator is permanently attached to the home's power array, and begins operating as soon as the power is out. This will allow the pump to continue to operate, and the protection against property damage can be as great as the value of the generator.
