Do You Know Where Golf Came From?

By:

Have you ever wondered where golf came from? Have you ever asked yourself, "who invented golf and when did they invent our wonderful game we call golf"?

If you are like most golfers you probably have heard that golf originated in Scotland. In fact it is most accepted that golf originated in the 12th century invented by bored shepherds. They would knock stones into rabbit holes. As a matter of fact, St Andrews one of the most famous and prestigious Golf Clubs sits as a modern day monument to this history.

Did you know that while the above is the normally accepted history of golf, there is actually some controversy surrounding its actual roots? In fact, some historians believe that the ancient Egyptians may have played golf. There is some evidence of this found by archaeologists on stone tablets which have dated back to the time of Pharaohs.

Also, some other historians have found record of golf being played in China. The game was played by hitting a small ball with a stick into holes in the ground. Record of this game was found in an 11th century Chinese book. It has been asserted that the game was introduced to Europeans in the 12th and 13th centuries by the Mongols.

Even the Dutch have laid claim to having started the game. It has been discovered that in a Dutch city in the year 1297 there is record of a game being played with a stick and a leather ball. The rules were kind of simple. You just had to hit a target several hundred meters away more often than everyone else to win.

It is most often recognized that while these games mentioned may have ultimately been responsible for shaping the actual game we know as golf being played today, there is no dispute as to where the game of golf that is played today originated from. That is from Scotland.

Scotland was the first country to have written rules for the modern version of golf that is played today. Scotland was also the first country to have an actual 18 hole golf course. Scotland was also the first country to have golf club memberships. The game then spread to England.

There is some evidence to suggest that Mary the Queen of Scots herself played golf at the oldest golf course in the world, The Mussel-burgh Old Links Golf Course in 1567.

Next time you are on the course, just take a moment to reflect upon the deep, rich, and interesting history of golf.
