Do You Know What Your Trip's Insurance Plan Won't Get You?

Travel insurance purchases have increased due to epidemics of diseases, environmental disasters, and terrorism scares. But there is a caveat. If you become worried about something happening and decide you need to cancel your trip, your policy may not cover it.

In most cases, fears of subway bombings or liquid explosive plots are not covered. If you are concerned about a weather calamity that is approaching your vacation spot, most likely you are not protected from this either. The purchase of travel insurance would not alleviate your concerns about either of those possibilities.

Travel insurance is there to help pay for the parts of the trip that are usually un-reimbursable. For example, a typical qualified expenditure would be plane fare.

It only applies to those situations where a policy holder HAS to cancel or delay a trip, or in the event the insured gets stranded it will help cover extra costs.

Travelers insurance will cover, however, your medical expenses should it occur overseas. Many medical policies that cover a person at home may not cover expenses in another country and the individual must pay for them unless they have travel insurance. However, most policies are loaded with loopholes related to what is not covered.

Most of the catastrophes that cause people to buy travel insurance are not included under the policy. In today's market, terrorism has become an exclusion. It is important to peruse these contracts.

But, even the policies that cover terrorist attacks will usually only make payment if there was an attack within 30 days of your departure and your schedule included that city. Your travel insurance company will not understand if you are scared to take your trip to Paris or Manchester, England, because there was a bombing in London. Basically fear of anything whatsoever is not covered.

The sad fact is, being afraid is why insurance sells! And the point is that fear is one of the things that most insurance policies don't cover. When purchasing travel insurance the buyer should beware of exclusions such as time frames as some policies will not cover teroristic acts if the policy has not been in effect for a certain period prior to travel.

However, the majority of insurance companies did cover the cost of meals and hotel stays for those policy holders who were stuck in London in 2006 after the foiled plot to blow up planes. On the other hand, because in this instance, there was no actual attack, policies did not pay if someone wanted to cancel their plans.

The cost of protection for traveling is just like every other insurance policy because it depends on where the person is going, how thorough they want their coverage to be and other risk factors.

There are policies you can get that can take care of costs incurred while you are stranded, cancellations of the trip, any medical coverage, flight accidents, or lost luggage that are called comprehensive policies. You may prefer to shop for a policy that covers only your concerns, they are available.

There are even companies who sell policies that allow you to cancel for any reason. These policies will offer the holder up to 74% of the cost of the trip if you cancel. The clincher is that these policies cost close to 40 percent more than others.

Currently in the US there's some seventeen million policies for travel insurance that are sold each year. Annual sales have just about doubled since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

The trend is not anticipated to change in the near future, considering the numerous health and medical emergencies in the headlines every week.

People don't realize that in the event of major disasters, airlines, cruise lines and hotels are usually lenient restrictions and fees for re-booking. In other words, you are protected without buying an insurance policy.
