Do You Know How Fast You're Driving?

It can be difficult to keep your vehicle in top condition. You have to keep an eye on all the devices on the instrument panel, and you have to know they are working properly. You have to pay close attention to things like speedometers and oil gauges to know that your car is working right and that you are not pushing it too hard.

Speedometers are one of the most important instrument panel elements for many different reasons. It is critical that it is providing you with the most accurate information possible. Not only will this stop you from causing undue stress on the engine, but it may also stop you from getting an undue amount of speeding tickets. This is one of the reasons speedometers are usually so centrally located on the panel.

Speedometers fall into one of two different types. The first is a mechanical speedometer, the second is electrical. Whichever model may be on your vehicle, it will have different calibration issues. That means if you need to do some work on the instrument panel, you need to make sure you understand the difference.

The first type - mechanical speedometers - relies on a flexible cable that will rotate a wheel and axle gear and spin a magnetic component. This, in turn, will electromagnetically interact with the metal disk that holds the needle. Calibrating a device like this requires a completely different approach than an electrical system.

The electrical speedometers on the market will usually use a rotation sensor to discern the actual speed. They use electrical pulses that correspond to the rotational speed of the driveshaft and are processed by a computer to deliver the actual speed of the car. These can use both digital and analog readouts.

An instrument panel will usually be filled with a wide range of devices and information displays. They are all necessary to keep the vehicle running as well as possible for as long as possible. This also means making sure that any warning lights are working right and that you deal with the indicated problem immediately.

If you find yourself in a situation that requires the removal of an instrument panel from the dashboard, you need to be extremely careful. Don't disconnect the wrong things and make sure you don't break anything that may be critical to the ongoing performance of your vehicle.

Always keep an eye on the components of your instrument panel. Whether it's the speedometers, gas level gauges, engine temp indicators, or anything else, maintaining the condition of your vehicle is dependent on the performance of these devices.
