Do You Have A Firebug Living In Your House

Fire safety in any home is a must in order to keep everyone that lives there safe. Everyone knows how essential it is to have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in place. The phone numbers to the fire department and police department need to be placed in a prominent place in the home where any family member can find them easily. Every child in the home that is old enough to read needs to know where the numbers are and how to dial the phone. Children as young as three can be taught to dial 911 in case of a fire or an other kind of emergency.

Teaching fire safety to every home member and having a fire escape plan in place that is easy to follow is also a necessity. Sometimes when a fire breaks out in the middle of the night, it is not easy to get everyone together. Each person needs to know exactly what to do and where to go in case they have to get out of the home on their own. Children can have an escape ladder in their bedrooms so they can get out a window if they are old enough to be taught how to use them safely.

These are just the things that need to be in the home and measures that need to be taken when and if there is a fire that breaks out. The most important thing of all is to try and make sure that a fire never happens. Most home fires are accidents of some sort and not nearly always the result of electrical malfunctions or explosions. Any member of a family can be a firebug if they have a habit of doing any particular thing that is prone to start a fire.

Someone in the home that smokes cigarettes is a constant fire risk. A regular smoker will light a cigarette usually 10, 20, or more times a day. This means that any time this is done inside the house, there is the potential to start a fire if care is not used every time. The best and most logical place to smoke a cigarette if you are going to is outside of the home, especially if there are children that live there.

Not to give smokers a bad wrap all by themselves, anyone who cooks in the kitchen regularly can be a danger too. It is easy to forget to turn of a stove eye or the oven. Sometimes someone will leave a pot holder or dish towel too close to the heat and that will catch on fire. If there are space heaters or a fireplace used in the home in cold weather, every adult in the home needs to be responsible to check these items often to make sure they are functioning properly and care is taken so that children can not get too near them. Chimney fires can happen easily if they are not properly cleaned and maintained each year. Space heaters can overheat, turn over, or catch other things on fire if they are too close to them.
