Do Some Home Cooking This Winter

By:

If you are feeling slightly rundown after the festive period and are looking for a way to reenergise yourself this January, eating more fruits and vegetables is sure to help. There are many ways in which you can do this, either by replacing chocolate for pieces of fruit or adding fresh fruit to your porridge or cereal in the morning, but if you want to get the most out of all this fruit and veg you should be sure to eat those that are in season.

Seasonal fruit and vegetables can be picked up from your local supermarket and they often contain the most vitamins and nutrients. This is because they are supposed to be grown around this time or year, when they have the maximum benefit of the weather. Generally, they will also have been grown within the UK and therefore wont have been shipped halfway around the world in order to be put on sale. During this travel, food can lose its flavour and so wont be as tasty once you get to it. When you buy fruit and veg you want to know that you are getting all of the nutrients that are supposed to be in them, but fruit and veg that is out of season may have been harvested early in order to ship it, so it wont have matured fully and will have missed out on important nutrients from the soil.

Many people assume that there isnt much in the way of fruit around this time of year, but this is completely wrong. In the wintertime you can get bananas, grapes, oranges, pomegranates, clementines, cranberries, kiwis, passion fruits, pears, rhubarb and much, much more. So, you could cook up a rhubarb crumble or a delicious fruit salad with ease.

When it comes to winter vegetables you will be even more spoilt for choice. This season offers up some of the tastiest vegetables available, with vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, swedes, turnips, shallots and leeks in their prime. You can create a creamy cauliflower cheese for dinnertime, make some homemade leek and potato soup or simply serve up some cabbage, swede or turnip as an accompaniment to your dinner.

Whether you are cooking an extravagant feast for a dinner party or you just want some winter warmers that the whole family can enjoy, be sure to include some delicious seasonal veg to help everyone get the vitamins and nutrients they need during the cold winter months ahead.
