Do Over-the-counter Hemorrhoids Remedies Really Work?

By:

The first thought most people have when they start experiencing itching, burning, or pain in their anus, is to run to the drugstore and pick up an over-the-counter (OTC) hemorrhoid remedy. Are these over-the-counter treatments really a hemorrhoid cure? Can they actually heal hemorrhoids or only provide temporary relief?

The first thing people usually try when they develop hemorrhoids are the popular creams and ointments. You know which ones I mean - they are heavily advertised are their name brands are a house hold word.

These topical hemorrhoid treatments are rubbed on the outer rectal area and aim to soothe swollen blood vessels. The healing ingredients in the most popular brand are shark oil and yeast, which sounds pretty weird and yet it does seem to work. Some contain analgesics to deaden the pain and itching sensations as well. They can indeed bring welcomed hemorrhoid relief and that is why they are so popular. But unfortunately, they are not a hemorrhoid cure and don't address the underlying reasons why people get them in the first place.

If the creams aren't working, people will move on to OTC hemorrhoid remedies in the form of suppositories. These create a lubricating effect for when the next rectal pressure comes. The aim is to ensure the hemorrhoids heal without rupturing again. Just as with the OTC creams, they can bring welcomed hemorrhoid relief, but they also are not a hemorrhoid cure.

Some people take OTC diuretics to lower their blood pressure. Unlike creams and suppositories, which are totally safe, these can have negative side effects. The way these help hemorrhoids is to tighten vein tissue so that the hemorrhoid is less fragile.

If your blood pressure is just a little high, you might want to try limiting your salt intake instead. It's important to drink plenty of water. If you genuinely have high blood pressure, it is imperative that you see your doctor and follow his prescribed treatment, for it as it can be a very serious condition. After all, they call it the "silent killer".

If none of these OTC remedies work for you, don't get discouraged - you still have many options. These range from herbal natural hemorrhoid remedies to one of several types of surgery. Whatever you choose, just remember that if you don't address the underlying cause of your hemorrhoids, they will return no matter what hemorrhoid remedy you decide on.
