The saying "opposites attract" is definitely true in some instances. Maybe it's the differences that create the initial attraction - the other person has traits, talents, interests that you don't and vice versa. Many couples find these dissimilarities alluring. The way in which you differ and the way you communicate as opposites is the key to whether you will ever be able to build a successful foundation together.

For example, you may be a strict vegetarian - he's a meat and potato man. You abhor horror movies - he absolutely loves the screams and fright. You love romantic movies - romantic movies make him sick. He plays tennis. You like pinball machines. You're an extrovert - he's an introvert. How will this work out?

You Can Make it Work
You may be able to work out these issues in the short term, but what about the long term? When you plan to go to a party with him and he doesn't want to go, will you go alone? When a romantic movie comes out that you want to see and he wants to see an action flick, who wins out? There can definitely be long term consequences when a person is very much the opposite of you. That is why the way you communicate with each other is the key as to how your relationship will work. And this is an issue that should be worked out almost from the very beginning as it only gets more difficult as the time goes on.

Compromise and Communication
It is imperative to be open-minded, and be able to compromise, as this will create an environment of security and contentment amongst opposites. Stubbornness in a union where strong differences exist can bring about disastrous results.

Before you let the relationship get too serious, ask yourself the following questions and be honest with your answers. Does being opposite create conflicts in your relationship? Do you find the differences exciting and stimulating? Can you live with the differences or would you rather share your time with someone who likes and wants similar things that you do? What is the foundation of your relationship based on? Are you both great communicators with the ability to compromise?

Open-Mindedness and Concern
Being open-minded and willing to compromise is the essential ingredient for a working, lasting union. Never go into the relationship believing that you will change the other person. It won't happen. Care about your partner and be communicative about everything. Without these abilities, no relationship will last. Yes, opposites do attract. But you both need to work at it to make the attraction last...
