Do Not Let Your Vegetable Garden Be A Late Bloomer

By:

Some people love to plant a home vegetable garden, but they just can not seem to get them started early enough for an optimum growing season. If you want a great vegetable garden, you have to get started sooner rather than later. This means you should be getting things ready by March at the latest no matter where you live. There are plenty of things that you can be working on so that when the weather turns and the last frost is over, you are ready to go and ready to get planting!

You might wonder what you could do in late winter that could help you get planting anything ready, but you can start with your garden layout. It is not good to plant the same vegetables in the same spots every year, so you will want to read up on what you should plant where. You should determine how many of each type of plant you need. If you grew a garden the year before and had either too much or not enough of a particular vegetable, then you will need to refine your space for those and provide room for more or less of each. This way you get the maximum growing capacity for the space you have available.

You must know when the planting time is for each vegetable. Starting seeds indoors well ahead of actual outside planting is always a great idea. Some people spend far too much money purchasing plant sets that are already started in pots instead of planting seeds directly into the ground. The whole idea of planting a vegetable garden is to save money on your food bill so why pay more for plant sets when you can start your own?

With just a small space set aside in the house, garage or storage building, you can get the right small containers from around the house for free. Never spend money for plastic or peat pots to start your seedlings when you can collect them all year. Egg cartons are very good to use as well as yogurt and pudding cups. Any small plastic container makes a great seed starting pot. This saves you money. Buy your seeds for tomatoes and other vegetables you can start indoors where you can get the best deals. Of course, you do want to buy quality seeds because if they do not produce well, all of energy and money spent will be for nothing.

Invest in good quality grow lights to use in your indoor space. Set up the plant containers in a place where they will be easy to tend and water. Make sure you follow the instructions that come with your grow lights so that the seedlings do not get too hot or too much light. While you are waiting for your seeds to sprout and grow, get your garden plot cleared and tilled. When the last frost is over, you will be ready to get your garden in the ground and growing while your neighbor is just getting started!
