Do Not Allow Fear To Stand In The Way Of Your Private Pilot License

By:

There are almost certainly several things preventing you from getting your PPL. One of them is probably fear.

Fears are expected. All of us possess them. Some people won't even admit to them, but we have them. This is especially true when we prepare to start something new. New is frequently thrilling, but it can be frightening. Fear of failure is generally the top thing on our list.

It is not a pleasant sensation to fail at anything. If you failed your driver's test the very first time you took it I bet you may remember the feeling. If you researched the word "down" in your dictionary, you would have seen a photo of yourself right next to the definition.

Failure is something nobody enjoys, and fear of failure is likely one of the most awful fears there is.

Okay, great...now that we've established that...how do we manage it?

But as bad as this fear is, there are methods to overcome it.

1. Taking a look at the opportunity you may be missing.

For instance, let's say you want to learn to fly but your fear of taking the examination puts a stop to those plans. Now envision what life is going to be like without being able to do this very thing that you like so much. There has got to be a reason you would like to fly in the 1st place. If you can stay focused on the main reason why you might find your fears little by little wither into the background.

2. Now Contemplate The Other Options

Imagine what you'll need to do without your private pilot license. You will be at the mercy of commercial airlines. You will not have the ability to go where you want to go WHEN you want to go there. You will be at the mercy of others. The alternatives to flying your own plane, if you don't want to depend on commercial airlines, are driving, train, bus and even boat. Focus on that, especially if the very thought of those things is very disagreeable. It will not be long before you say goodbye to your fear of failure.

3. Consider the worst case scenario and put it in perspective.

Let's say you fail your PPL exam? What can happen next that is so bad you cannot get over it? They can't tell you that you can't take it over. You can simply take the examination another time. It's not like this is a one time deal. If that were the case, there would be a lot of people not driving or flying planes. It's not the end of the world in the event you fail. All it means is you will have to wait a little longer before you can fly.

4. Be aware of The Benefits Of Failure

When we fail at anything, we learn something. We can improve on things after we recognize what we did incorrect. Would you rather that you did not fail your examination only because some teacher took pity on you and ended up getting yourself killed because you really weren't prepared to fly?

5. Get your Contingency Plan Ready

If you do fail, have a plan. Be ready for the possibility ahead of time by planning more lessons and extra flight time. Just because you do not succeed doesn't suggest you must give up.

6. Take Action

Jumping in and taking action can help you eradicate your fear faster than anything else. Putting things off only enhances your fear. The result is that you simply get so scared you reach the point where you do not even take the exam.

7. Burn Your Boats

Ancient Greeks were known to burn their own boats, giving themselves no choice but to move ahead. They couldn't turn back. Anything it takes for you to burn your boat, you should do it. That might mean getting on the telephone and scheduling the examination. No matter what it means for you, you need to do.
