One of the biggest advertisers on TV are home security companies with their specials for installation. They make it sound so appealing-giving you that peace of mind. The monthly charges of and long term contract add up to a pile of dough.

So much so that one of the biggest problems for these companies now is late or no pays because of the recession. Economic times have put the squeeze on everyone. Homeowners see the monthly expense as too much for too little and just quit paying.

In some respects it is like any other insurance-you don't need it until you need it.

Home security is really only limited by how much money you have and want spend on it. Security companies, security guards, perimeter gates and more can be very pricey.

1. Start on the Outside-Does your home have a "welcome mat" out with lots of hiding places and easy access, for example, to second floor windows? Is your garage door left open often? Any Neighborhood Watch signs or beware of "vicious dog"signs?

2. Spotlights-Motion activated spotlights are relatively inexpensive lighting systems activated by motion detectors. The bad guys do not like light. They are easy to install too.

3. Lock Doors and Windows-Police tell us that 60% of all home burglaries happen thru unlocked doors and windows. HELLO!

4. Alarms-Door and window alarms are set to trigger if they are opened. Bad guys hate noise too or anything that will draw attention.

5. Home Security Cameras-Will stop the bad guys pronto and pay for themselves too with many insurance companies giving discounts for having one. They are easy to use and install and allow for remote internet viewing.
