Do I Need To Replace My Chiller

Just because your chiller is still running does not mean that it does not need to be replaced. It is understandable as to why people do feel that way. Chillers are expensive. What they do not understand is that yes the chiller is running but what is it costing you to run it? If the chiller is no running to the best of its ability then the unit just may be costing you money. If you sit back and really think about it, it may be more money up front but the money that you will save can justify the expense.

An older unit that is maintained should use about 0.80-0.90 kW/ton. These are the numbers if the unit is being taken care of properly. If the unit is not being maintained the way that it should be then the numbers will be higher. If the unit is a newer more efficient one that it will run about 0.50 kW/ton. Also the newer models have higher part-load efficiencies than older chillers. Because they are able to run at higher part-load efficiencies it also saves you money in energy costs. It saves you money because most of these units are generally run about ninety five percent of the time.

There is a lot of things that need to be taken into consideration before you can decide wither or not you need a new chiller or not. A good way to begin is by getting a load profile for the existing unit. What this is a report that will let you know exactly how much kW/ton over the entire operating range for that chiller in that facility, from full-load to the minimum load the chiller experiences.

Once you have this information then it will be easier to figure out if you require a new unit or not. Also you will need to perform a life-cycle cost analysis for the replacement unit. Also you will need to be able to present the findings including other options that are available. The other possibilities would include the costs for a new unit and also the costs for continuing to use the existing unit. With that you should include the service interruptions. Especially if you are the manager of the building then you will need to have all of the information to be able to present getting the funding that you need to get the unit replaced.
