Do I Need To Adjust My Butane Lighter For High Altitudes?

If you are planning a hiking or camping trip that will take you to high elevations, it is important that you make sure that your lighter will work at these higher altitudes. Disposable lighters do not work at high altitudes. However, butane torches will do the trick. Keep in mind that even though a butane lighter will work, it needs to be adjusted in order to compensate for the elevation. Higher elevations also bring colder temperatures, another factor that decreases the functioning capabilities of lighters. For this obstacle, all you have to do is place your lighter in your pocket so that it remains warm until just before use. This will allow you to ignite it with ease. The majority of lighters simply will not light in extremely cold temps.

There is one more important step that you will need to take when traveling at high elevations. Lighters will not function when temperatures are too cold, which is often the case at high altitudes. You can easily take care of this issue by keeping your lighter in your pocket or other warm place near your body until you are ready to use it. With an increased amount of butane release and a warm lighter, it should light even at high elevations. Keep in mind that you will use up more butane than usual when the valve is opened up.
