Do I Have Bed Bugs In The House?

By:

Bed bug problems are a growing issue. These tiny pests are tough to spot. Their actual size is approximately 1/8 of an inch. They were found in many US communities for years, but not officially considered a problem until the fifties. DDT was discovered shortly after and used to get the infestations under control.

Last Friday the Emerson elementary school in Detroit was treated for these pests. There was also an announcement that the environmental protection agency will be holding a national summit on February 1st to address the national bed bug problem.

No one knows exactly why they have suddenly returned as an issue in the United States. One theory states that since there is so much world travel these days, the bugs are hitching rides and relocating back to the States. Another theory is that the pesticides are weaker now than in the past and that the ban on stronger ones creates this problem. They usually stowaway inside of luggage and on clothing. With the population on the rise, hotel and motel guests have a greater risk of coming into contact with them and inadvertently bringing them home.

Regardless of why this problems has grown, they result in a negative reaction on many levels. They leave a nasty, red welt that is not easily ignored and is known to cause problems for hypersensitive individuals. Even if you do not see the bugs, the bites they leave are a clear indication that they exist and could be in your bedding. If you have red bite marks and a rash your best course of action is seeking the opinion of a qualified physician or dermatologist. There are many reasons for rashes including eczema, allergic responses and insect bites.

A good way to find out if you have a bed bug problem is to lay down insect or mouse glue traps. Even double sided adhesive tape will do. Lay the traps down in a number of areas on and around your mattress. Wrapping the tape around the mattress below the top and keeping the blanket above this area is a way to detect and catch some. You can also use a bright flashlight to inspect likely hiding places.

The bed bug problems should not be taken lightly. If you realize you have some of these unwelcome guests in your bed, it is important to take immediate action. You can spray or dust the mattress and box spring. While replacing your bedding or mattress may be important, you will need to notify your landlord or find an exterminator yourself. Often in an apartment complex or condo, it takes a group of concerned residents to finally get action to be taken.
