When you're looking for a dentist, you may see different dentists advertising their credentials in different ways. Some dentists in Palatine may have themselves advertised as a DMD, and others may have themselves shown as a DDS. This can be confusing to many people looking at their available dental care options, but it shouldn't be, because the truth is that these two certifications mean essentially the same thing.

You don't need to worry that you're going to be getting the wrong kind of care, or inferior dental care if you go to a dentist labeled as DDS instead of DMD, or vice versa. These are degrees which different schools give out when a graduate has completed their dental education. The important point to note here though, is that the degrees do not have any practical difference between the two of them.

The American Dental Association has been quick to point out as well that there is no recognized distinction between the degrees in any way. The ADA acknowledges holders of either degree as a dentist of equal certification. Essentially, the only difference between a DDS and a DMD is a semantic one, and is simply based on where the dentist went to school rather than any difference in their actual education. For someone looking for a dentist, it is good that you understand this, rather than worrying about which dentist has which degree when in the end it turns out that they mean essentially the same thing.

If you are interested though, the two degrees stand for the Dental Medicine Degree, and a Doctor of Dental Surgery. With either of those degrees, the degree holder is entitled to enter into the general practice of dentistry. They are equally qualified to pursue any further specialty, but neither is a specialist in any particular area of dentistry based on that degree alone.

Both the DDS and the DMD take four years in a standard program to complete. With either degree, a dentist can practice their craft in any of the 50 states in this country.

Do not think that a DMD is in any way an inferior degree, but more and more schools are moving towards offering a DDS instead, simply in an attempt to unify the degree's dentists have. Despite this, there are some schools that are holdouts and are going to continue to offer a DMD for some time to come.
